Guild Wars 2 adds an authenticator system

Fans of Diablo 3, and other Blizzard games may know about the Authenticator system, meant to keep your account safe. Guild Wars 2 is getting Authenticator support. As of today, the Authenticator system is in Beta.

Mobile two-factor authentication is an alternative means of securing your Guild Wars 2 account, and like e-mail authentication, is optional but strongly encouraged. Rather than sending you an e-mail when unauthorized login attempts occur, the game (or any of our online web sites) will prompt you for a six-digit number any time you log in to a Mobile Authenticator-protected account. Using a freely available app on three major smartphone platforms – iOS, Android, and Windows Phone – you can obtain the correct six-digit number unique to your account. These numbers change every 30 seconds and can only be used once; this ensures that without your mobile device, an attacker would not be able to compromise your Guild Wars 2 account.

The important part there, for fans of the Windows Phone 8 releaseing soon, is that you can get an authenticator on Windows Phones. Once I get my Windows Phone 8 this christams, the Authenticator will be the first thing I get.

Exciting times for fans of security in Guild Wars 2.

  1. Even if it is late it's nice to see then start giving users a balance between security and user experience by implementing 2FA which allows us to telesign into our accounts. I know some will claim this make things more complicated, but the slight inconvenience each time you log in is worth the confidence of knowing your info is secure. I'm hoping that more companies start to offer this awesome functionality. This should be a prerequisite to any system that wants to promote itself as being secure.

    1. I completley agree. It is nice to see the new security via 2FA in Guild Wars 2. Every company should offer this, if they want a really secure game.
